Visual Artist

Visual Artist Irene “Beanie” Sparks

is a multi-talented visual artist recognized for her versatility across various mediums. Based in Pittsburgh, she is best known as a skilled face and body painter, creating awe-inspiring murals in restaurants, homes, and businesses throughout the region. Irene also has a passion for teaching art to children and is renowned for her Sci-Fi FX makeup work. Recently, she contributed to the Pittsburgh Haunted House show Hell Way to Heaven, where she brought the character of “The Devil” to life each night. Creativity runs deep in Irene’s family. Growing up, she watched her mother sew stunning wedding dresses, suits, and upholstered furniture. At the same time, her father, a theater set designer and professional photographer, taught Photography at a local community college in Arizona. Their bathroom often doubled as a darkroom, and the dining room table became a cutting board for her mother’s projects. Irene’s creative talents, which began as a hobby, soon became a profession after someone offered to pay her for her work. “I was like, ‘Wow! Okay,’” Irene recalls, transforming from a child hiding her paintings behind furniture to a professional artist with a growing fan base. Pittsburgh continues to be captivated by her artistry, whether it’s hand-painted instruments, SFX makeup, body painting, or her vibrant canvas work. Irene has held several solo exhibitions in local galleries and has had her work displayed in notable spaces, including the Pittsburgh mayor’s office for various occasions and events. She was a featured artist for Governor Josh Shapiro during Black History Month and Juneteenth, and her work has been showcased at the African American Art Museum in Erie and the Black Girl Art Show in Atlanta, Georgia, in 2019. You can find her artwork at Senator Lindsay Williams’ office, numerous local restaurants, and various businesses through her “Queens and Crowns Traveling Gallery.” Irene has also made countless other appearances and contributions across Southwestern Pennsylvania.
